Useful Surf Accessories You Must Have (Part I)

Surfing doesn’t really require that many accessories to be a fully adrenaline-driven activity. However, there’s always a few additions and components you can aquire to enhance your surfing experience and to act like a real pro on the waves.

Fins

Fins are attached to the bottom of the board and help you ride the waves. As you can imagine, fins have a great impacto on the feel, stability and maneuverability, altering the way you surf in the most deep and direct way. Fin design and template is almost endless, but there are two main types you should recognize: removable and permanent.

Sunscreen

While you’re out there looking for that one perfect wave you’re being exposed to sun light and radiation that can be extremelly dangerous for your health, bye destroying your DNA cells and leading to skin cancer, dehydration, among others. We already know that the most dangerous time to be in sun is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., but it’s also crucial to remind you that those cloudy days are potentially harmful too. Then, a good sunscreen is an absolute must have for any surfer: look for lotions or sprays that both UVA and UVB protection as well as protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher. Apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before your surfing sessions – if you wear a wetsuit, don’t forget to apply generous amounts of sunscreen in your face, hands and feet.

Changing Poncho

To keep a towel in your waist, get your suit out and sometimes holding an extra elemento (an umbrella, for instance) is a tough job even for the most coordinate of surfers. For that reason it’s quite essential thar you have a nice changing poncho in your “arsenal” – basically it’s two towels sewn together with a little hole for you head and enough space to change clothes comfortably and without stressing out about flashing your least appropriate parts to the parking lot.

Boardbag

Keep your board safe and fracture-free while it’s being stored or transported. There are three kinds of boardbags that you can go with: a sock, a soft boardbag or a hard case.

Wax

Before surfing wax came around, surfers were slipping and slidding through their surfboards everyday. Finally, in the 60’s, surf wax arrived to give surfers the traction they needed, and they finally managed to paddle and ride waves without the difficulty of falling every 2 minutes. Thus, surfing wax became an absolut unavoidable accessory. Nowadays we have surfing wax for every water temperature, as well as additional acessories to apply it (for ex: wax comb).
