Surfing Dictionary | Longboard
The longboard is widely used for learning purposes for beginners, but it has many complex features: after all, she is considered the "midwife" of surfing as we know it.
The longboard is a large surfing board (it can easily exceed three meters in length) that allows smoother maneuvers and the so called "walks to the nose". Because of its size and technology, it floats better and it allows for an easier and cleaner entry into the wave - which is why it’s widely used in the learning phase by new surfers and beginners. However, this does not mean that these boards are solely designed for learning purposes. In fact, there are many specialized professional surfers in this particular type of board.
It can also be said that the longboard is the "midwife" of surf, as it is the oldest board in history and it was the one used by the Hawaiian ancestors in the early days of surfing.
